Lewis tore his right triceps Sunday and was scheduled to undergo surgery Wednesday. Although coach John Harbaugh said the 37-year-old linebacker is out for the year, the Ravens placed Lewis on injured reserve with the “designated to return” tag.
Wednesday’s move makes Lewis eligible to return in six weeks. He does not count against the 53-man roster.
The loss of Lewis coincides with the return of linebacker Terrell Suggs, who practiced Wednesday for the first time after missing months with a torn Achilles.

NFL responds to bounty suits
The NFL is again urging a federal judge to avoid interfering in Commissioner Roger Goodell’s efforts to discipline players for the Saints’ bounty pool.
In a response to papers the players filed this week, the NFL says its collective bargaining agreement with the union gives Goodell the power to handle discipline involving conduct detrimental to football “at his discretion.”
U.S. District Judge Ginger Berrigan is considering requests to overturn suspensions to Saints LB Jon Vilma (season), Saints DE Will Smith (4 games), free agent DT Anthony Hargrove (7) and Cleveland LB Scott Fujita (1).
Vilma is practicing with the Saints after months of rehab on his left knee and could play this weekend.
