3 students hurt when bus overturns in field

COLFAX, Ind. – A school bus loaded with children veered off a rural central Indiana road on Friday and overturned in a farm field, injuring at least three children, authorities said.

The crash involved a Clinton Prairie school district bus near Colfax that was on its way to school about 8 a.m., said Renee Crick, the Clinton County emergency dispatch center director.

Three children were taken by ambulance to a hospital in nearby Frankfort, while the bus driver and 23 other children were taken to a hospital in another school bus to be checked out, she said.

Crick didn’t immediately know how badly the children were hurt or their ages.

School district officials didn’t immediately return a phone message seeking comment.

Crick said the crash happened as the bus was carrying elementary, middle and high school students to the district’s single K-12 school. No other vehicles were involved.

The crash happened about 15 miles southeast of Lafayette on a road wet from morning rains, but information on what caused the crash wasn’t immediately released. The crash left the bus on its side, with many of its windows broken out.
