Injury update

Notre Dame receiver John Goodman, a Bishop Dwenger graduate, could have played in Saturday’s 17-14 win over BYU, coach Brian Kelly said during his Sunday teleconference.

But the fifth-year senior, who has been dealing with a back injury the last two weeks, was held out of the game because of the No. 5 Irish’s game plan against the Cougars.

“The game was a game where we wanted a bigger body out there,” Kelly said of why Goodman missed a second game in a row. “Danny Smith got a lot of those reps because of the way the game was going to be managed the rest of the way out. John was ready to go if he was needed.

“You know, again, he is a good blocker, he’s not as big and strong, and of course coming off the back, we felt like Dan would give us a better chance out there. … (Goodman) should be full go for this weekend (at No. 8 Oklahoma (5-1)).”

Safety Nicky Baratti let out that he suffered an injury against BYU on his Twitter account, posting: “Dislocated my shoulder but grinded it out for the rest of the game” and following that up Sunday with “My shoulder……#VerySore.”

After joking – or maybe not – that Baratti would not be allowed to use Twitter this week, Kelly said. the freshman had a “subluxation” of the shoulder. Baratti was stabilized and cleared by the medical staff to continue playing against BYU, Kelly said.

Cornerback Bennett Jackson, who was attended to by trainers during Saturday’s game, had a strained neck, but he should be fine to play this week, Kelly said.

Kicker Nick Tausch hasn’t played since the season opener, and Kelly said the groin injury that has sidelined him could be worse than originally thought.

“He’s coming back,” Kelly said. “He’s a lot stronger in kicking the football now, but the door was opened for Kyle (Brindza) to go in there and we’re pleased with where we are with him.”
