And so, for the first time in four decades, the Basketball State has a pro basketball champion.
It also has a new basketball icon, even if you've never really thought of her that way. But Tamika Catchings, who powered the Fever past the Lynx one more time Sunday, has earned the right to fill the same sentence with Larry and Oscar and Big George and John Wooden from Martinsville.
She may not be from here, but she's of here, embodying all of those things (class, character, a lot of blue in the collar) we like to think are representative of what basketball in this state is -- a champion being least among them.
So welcome home, Tamika. You class the joint up.
