Here is what Chris Auger had to say today, after learning he would miss the rest of the season because of a knee injury suffered Saturday in a 4-3 shootout victory over the Evansville IceMen.

"I guess devastation and shock, any one of those kind of words, would suffice in this situation," Auger said. "We thought I just had a sprained MCL and the MRI was for precautionary reasons, and then I got slammed with all of that, getting the results back."

Auger has a completely torn ACL, a torn meniscus and the MCL strain, he said.

It will take several weeks of rehabilitation before he can even have surgery on the ACL and the meniscus.

Auger as already recovered from one terrible injury -- he missed much of the 2010-11 season because of a shoulder injury -- yet he insists he will return.

"Absolutely," he said. "There are plenty of guys who have had this surgery. And it's not like the shoulder, where you lose mobility or range of motion. I'm going to be able to come back 100 percent, which is different than my shoulder. I am going to continue to play and I hope it will be in Fort Wayne when it comes time to come back."

The Komets have no immediate plans to bring someone else in. They will activate forward Matt Firman and expect forward Josh Brittain to step up more.

"Chris was our leading goal scorer last year, and he'd recovered from major shoulder surgery to really put up good numbers for us," general manager David Franke said. "Anytime you lose a player to a season-ending injury, it's difficult and disappointing for the player.

"It's a shock to everybody. But these injuries happen, not only in hockey but in all of sports. We've just got to suck it up and this will give some other guys more ice time and chance to develop. We're not going out and signing another player right now, so that's where we're at."
