Rural Steuben fire termed suspicious

Police in Steuben County are asking for help in solving a suspicious fire that destroyed an abandoned home in Helmer this past weekend.

Firefighters from several stations were called to a home at Indiana 327 and County Road 762 South just before 10 p.m. Saturday. Crews battled the blaze for several hours before it was brought under control, investigators said.

The house was a total loss, according to a detective with the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department, and the fire is classified as “suspicious.”

Those with information about the case are asked to call Steuben County Crime Stoppers at 260-668-STOP (7867) or 1-800-600-HALT (4528), or email www.steubencountycrimestoppers.org.
