This is a simple hat with a fun, easy start.
Use yarn that knits well at a gauge of 26 stitches in 4 inches. Sock yarn (such as Patons Kroy Sock) or fingering-weight yarn should work. I made mine with a small amount of handspun wool.
What youll need:
Needles: No. 5 (or size needed to get gauge), whatever type you prefer for working in the round.
Gauge: 26 stitches in 4 inches.
Size: 13 1/2 inches around. Newborn to 6 months, but babies vary.
What youll do:
Edging. Cast on 176 stitches.
Knit 2 together (k2t), Purl 2 together (p2t) across.
Join, to work in the round.
Work (k1, p1) around for 4 rounds.
Main hat. Knit every stitch until the hat is 5 inches long. Decrease for Top
R1: (k9, k2t) around.
R2 and all other even-numbered rounds through round 16: k every stitch.
R3: (k8, k2t) around.
R5: (k7, k2t) around.
R7: (k6, k2t) around.
R9: (k5, k2t) around.
R11: (k4, k2t) around.
R13: (k3, k2t) around.
R15: (k2, k2t) around.
R17: (k1, k2t) around.
R18: k2t around.
R19: k2t around.
Break yarn, leaving a tail 4 inches long. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches, twice if you are paranoid. Darn in all ends and enjoy.
