Leaf collection crews start on south side early

– City crews collecting leaves were able to complete the first passage through central neighborhoods ahead of schedule.

Starting today, crews will move into the south-side neighborhoods, where collection was to begin next Monday. But being ahead of schedule will not cause missed pickups for those residents who were planning to have their leaves out next Monday.

“Sometimes it takes four days to get through a section of town and sometimes six or seven days,” said Bob Kennedy, the city’s director of public works. “It always depends on the amount of leaves that have fallen. We will be in the southern neighborhoods (Thursday) where many of the residents have already placed leaves in the park strip.”

Residents are asked to have their leaves at the curb by 7 a.m. on their scheduled collection week.

Residents can track progress online at www.cityoffortwayne.org/leaves. The page is updated each afternoon and pinpoints the neighborhood where crews are working. Also, residents can call the leaf pickup hotline, 427-2302.
