Fire guts vacant DeWald home

A blaze heavily damaged a vacant house Thursday on Fort Wayne’s south side, the city fire department said.

Fire crews arrived at 314 E. DeWald St., near East Creighton Avenue and Lafayette Street, about 9 p.m. They encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the two-story house.

Firefighters found flames in a bedroom that had spread to the attic. The fire was under control in 17 minutes, the department said.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
