TV ads top $25 million in Mourdock-Donnelly race

INDIANAPOLIS – The television air war between Republican Richard Mourdock and Democrat Joe Donnelly for Indiana’s Senate seat is topping $25 million.

A Democratic source tracking ad buys for the Donnelly campaign said Wednesday that Mourdock and his supporters had bought $13.6 million of air time through Election Day and Donnelly supporters had logged $11.5 million. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because the campaign doesn’t publicly release tallies.

Indiana’s Senate race was already on its way to being the most expensive the state has seen. But Mourdock’s comments last week that pregnancy resulting from rape is something “God intended” spurred Democrats and Republicans to buy more commercial time.

Senate Democrats spent $1.1 million replaying the Mourdock comments, while American Crossroads spent $1.5 million to push the narrative back against Donnelly.
