Tummy bug hits 200 students, closes school

BATAVIA, Ohio – A southwest Ohio school will be closed Friday after more than 200 children and some employees reported illness due to what school officials say appears to be a stomach virus.

The principal of Batavia Elementary School in Clermont County east of Cincinnati said county health officials advised closing to allow time for students and staff to recover and for the building to be cleaned and disinfected.

The county health commissioner said the health district is investigating the cause of the gastro-intestinal illness that resulted in symptoms including nausea and vomiting. The commissioner said some illness was reported Wednesday.

Parents were asked to pick up their children early Thursday if possible. Buses were operating on the normal schedule.

The kindergarten to fourth-grade school has 950 students.
