Ants get Elkhart product

The Mad Ants obtained 6-foot-1 guard Dairese Gary in a trade with the Los Angeles D-Fenders.

Gary, an Elkhart native, averaged 14.1 points, 5.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds during his 2011 senior season at the University of New Mexico, where he played under former Indiana University standout and Manchester coach Steve Alford. He was also a teammate of former Mad Ants guard Darrington Hobson, who played eight games with the Ants last season as property of the Milwaukee Bucks.

Gary was the D-Fenders' first round pick in the recent NBA D-League draft, and was traded to the Ants for 6-11 forward Jarrid Famous and Darnell Dodson, a 6-7 forward from Southern Mississippi who was chosen in the fourth round of the draft.

He suffered a season-ending ACL tear prior to the Lobos playing in the NIT his senior season.

According to an Associated Press report, he was later arrested for drunk driving after Albuquerque, N.M., police responded to a call about a car driving into mailboxes at a local apartment complex.

Famous played eight games with the Ants last season and averaged 11.1 points and 8.5 rebounds.

Players are scheduled to report Nov. 12, with the first practice Nov. 13.

The Ants open their sixth D-League season Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial Coliseum against Erie.
