A Fort Wayne man who had to be extricated from his car after a three-vehicle crash in Markle on Monday has died, the Huntington County Coroners Office said.
Richard D. Connelly Jr., 57, was driving south on Indiana 3 south of South Clark Street shortly before 2 p.m. when his car crossed the centerline and crashed into two oncoming vehicles in the northbound lane.
Connelly died at the scene and was taken to the Northeast Indiana Forensic Center in Fort Wayne.
The driver of a sport utility vehicle, Michael Gillespie of Montpelier, was struck by Connellys car.
A pickup truck driven by Robert Williford of Angola was following behind the SUV and was also struck by Connellys car.
Gillespie suffered minor injuries but declined medical assistance. Williford and a passenger escaped injury in the crash.
Southbound traffic on Indiana 3 was closed for several hours, police said.
An autopsy conducted Tuesday ruled Connellys death to be accidental from blunt-force trauma.
Coroner Philip Zahm said he had spoken with the family Monday evening and they did not know where Connelly was headed at the time of the crash.
Zahm said Connelly appeared to be dressed in hunting clothes and had hunting-related items in his car.
