Notre Dame lost a receiver who was coming into his own in Saturday’s 21-6 win at Boston College.

During his Sunday teleconference, Irish coach Brian Kelly said sophomore receiver DaVaris Daniels had surgery on a broken clavicle in the morning and will be out for the rest of the season. Daniels left BC’s Alumni Stadium with his left arm in sling, according to reports.

Daniels is expected to be able to return for Notre Dame’s bowl game.

“This will be a temporary setback for him, and we will have him out probably three, three and a half weeks where he will start running and noncontact,” Kelly said. “He will be ready to impact our team in the postseason.”

Daniels came into Saturday night after having his best performance of the season in a 29-26 triple-overtime home win over Pittsburgh on Nov. 3. The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder had seven catches for 86 yards against the Panthers, and he had two catches for 22 yards against Boston College before suffering the injury.

Daniels has 25 receptions for 375 yards this season.

“We think he was making really good progress, learning how to play the position, learning how to practice,” Kelly said. “He’s made really good progress.”

The news was better for Notre Dame on the defensive end as the No. 3 Irish (10-0) prepare for the season’s final two games against Wake Forest (5-5) at home Saturday and at USC (5-3) on Nov. 24.

Kelly said cornerback KeiVarae Russell did suffer a head injury against the Eagles, but Russell shouldn’t miss any practice time this week.

“It, cleared up nicely, and he looks to be on track for practice on Tuesday,” Kelly said.

Kelly also confirmed where Notre Dame’s lone No. 1 vote in the USA Today coaches poll, which factors into the BCS standings that are released tonight, came from.

“I voted Notre Dame first,” Kelly said. “I had them second last week to Alabama. Of course, Alabama lost. I’ll typically move up the next slot.”
