Angola resident dies after blaze

A person pulled from a burning house in Angola died Monday afternoon, according to the Angola Fire Department.

Police officers were first to arrive at the house at 809 Growth Parkway, and they could see heavy flames on the first floor.

After learning that a person was trapped inside, the officers tried to make a rescue but the heat and smoke thwarted them.

Firefighters were dispatched to the house at 3:12 p.m. and arrived six minutes later. They entered the house and removed the person, who died at the scene, fire officials said.

Fire officials identified Herbert Sanders as the owner and occupant of the house. Later Monday night, the Steuben County Coroner’s Office confirmed Sanders, 81, died in the fire.

With help from Fremont fire crews, the Angola Fire Department had the blaze under control by 3:27 p.m. The fire was contained to the living room and kitchen. The cause remains under investigation, fire officials said.
