Motorcyclist charged in DWI injury crash

Prosecutors allege that a Fort Wayne man operated a motorcycle while drunk in June and caused a crash that injured himself and a passenger.

Michael Kelly, 34, was charged Tuesday with a misdemeanor count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, two felony counts of criminal recklessness and two felony counts of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury.

According to court papers, Kelly and a passenger were riding a 1994 Honda motorcycle at high speed on June 27.

For some reason, the motorcycle went off Lower Huntington Road, west of Coverdale Road, in southwest Allen County.

Kelly and his passenger were thrown from the motorcycle, and they each received multiple injuries, according to court documents.

A witness told police that Kelly had sped past her in a no-passing zone just before the crash. Investigators also learned that Kelly was seen speeding and passing between vehicles near Ardmore Avenue and Engle Road before the crash, according to court papers.

A test showed that Kelly’s blood-alcohol level was 0.16 percent, court papers said. The limit deemed legally intoxicated for Indiana drivers is 0.08 percent.

Kelly, of the 1400 block of Huestis Avenue, was being held at the Allen County Lockup in lieu of $18,250 bail.
