Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o was named one of five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, given to college football's best defensive player, on Thursday.
The 6-foot-2, 255-pound senior linebacker leads the Irish with 92 tackles, and set the school record for interceptions in a season with six this year. He is tied for second in interceptions in the FBS, and his eight takeaways – he also has two fumble recoveries – is also the second most this season by an FBS player.
The other finalists for the award are South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones, Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner and Florida State defensive end Bjoern Werner.
The winner will be announced on Dec. 3 and presented the Bronko Nagurski Trophy at a banquet at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte, N.C., where Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly will give the keynote address. NFL Network will televise the event.
