Early morning fire damages Twin Oaks Apartments

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — Dozens of people living in a Fort Wayne apartment building scrambled to safety after a fire started in a second-floor unit.

Authorities say a passing driver called just after midnight Thursday reporting smoke and flames coming from the roof of a building in the Twin Oaks apartment complex on the city's south side.

Fire Chief Amy Biggs says most residents were outside by the time firefighters arrived. WANE-TV and WPTA-TV report some 40 firefighters needed about 50 minutes to get the blaze under control.

No injuries were reported and the fire was contained to a few apartments, but the 16-unit building had heavy smoke damage. A cause wasn't immediately determined.
