Verbatim: VA names new director at Fort Wayne medical center

Statement as issued Friday by the Department of Veterans Affairs:

Fort Wayne, IN. – The Department of Veterans Affairs is pleased to announce the appointment of Denise Deitzen as the new Director of the VA Northern Indiana Health Care System. Deitzen will oversee delivery of health care to more than 39,000 Veterans with an operating budget of $170 million.

Deitzen has been the Director, VA Medical Center, Saginaw, MI, for nearly three years.

"Ms. Deitzen's experience in opening clinics throughout lower Michigan makes her the ideal candidate to lead VA Northern Indiana's aggressive expansion plans," said Michael Finegan, Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN) 11 Director. "We are excited that she has decided to move to VANIHCS and look forward to working with her to continue the improvements made over the last several years."

Ms. Deitzen started her career at the Saginaw VA Medical Center in 1986 as a staff nurse. She worked in the private sector as a nursing instructor and critical care nurse for several years before returning to public service as a clinical nurse specialist in Medicine and Ambulatory Care fifteen years ago.

Ms. Deitzen has occupied various leadership positions throughout VISN 11. Ms. Deitzen previously served as Acting Director, Battle Creek VAMC, from September 2008 to May 2009; Acting Chief Medical Officer, VISN 11, Ann Arbor, MI, from April 2008 to September 2008; Acting Director, John D. Dingell VAMC, Detroit, MI, from January 2008 to April 2008; Acting Director, Battle Creek VAMC, from April 2006 to December 2006; and Associate Director for Patient Care Services, Battle Creek VAMC, from August 2004 to December 2009.

Ms. Deitzen has a Bachelors Degree in Nursing from Michigan State University; a Masters Degree in Nursing/ Nurse Practitioner from Grand Valley State University. Professional training includes University of North Carolina SES Leadership Course, 2012; SES Candidate Development Program, 2009; Leadership VA, 2007; Executive Career Field Candidate Program, 2004; and Health Care Leadership Institute, 2002.

"Her sound leadership and proven experience make her a unique and valuable asset to the facility, employees and volunteers, and most importantly, for the Veterans we are honored to serve," Finegan said.
