Statement as issued Friday by the U.S. Postal Service:
INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Preble is a small town in Adams County that includes a Post Office, a volunteer fire department, a restaurant and an outdoor arena.
Preble will have something new starting today, Nov. 16, 2012 when the 14th Village Post Office (VPO) in the U.S. Postal Service’s Greater Indiana District officially opens at the Preble Feed & Grain , 6035 N 400 W, Preble, IN 46782.
Connie Garner, who owns Preble Feed and Grain with her father, says she sees the VPO as a convenience to her customers, especially to older members of the local community. “I think it will be very convenient for them to buy their stamps and pick up shipping supplies outside the Post Office’s regular hours,” Garner said.
Preble Feed and Grain has been a fixture in the community for almost 40 years. Garner says the store’s clientele comes mainly from the local farming community that tend to be repeat customers as well as those from a larger area that require the store’s services including grinding and mixing feed for livestock. The store also has a small section that caters to pet owners.
The feed and grain store is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays.
The new postal center will be opened by Manager of Post Office Operations Gary Soultz and several USPS executives and local officials will be present at the event. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 11:30 a.m. and an open house will follow from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m.
Last year, the Postal Service introduced the VPO model as an alternate retail location for postal products and services, especially in rural communities.
VPOs are operated by local businesses contracting with the Postal Service, and offer a range of popular postal products and services including stamps and flat-rate packaging.
Preble is the 73rd VPO to open nationwide. Two additional VPOs are slated to open in the Greater Indiana District in November. Glenwood, 75th in the nation will open on Monday, Nov. 19, and Corunna, 83rd in the nation will open on Tuesday, Nov. 27.
