Dog dies in Fort Wayne house fire

FORT WAYNE – A dog died Friday morning in a fire at a home on the city’s south side, according to a statement issued by the Fort Wayne Fire Department.

Firefighters were called to 3904 Gaywood Ave., near Rudisill Boulevard, about 9:50 a.m. When they arrived, there was smoke coming from the basement windows, the statement said.

The fire had spread to the floor above and was quickly extinguished, the fire department said.

The one-story house sustained heavy fire, water and smoke damage.

No residents were home at the time of the fire, and Fort Wayne Animal Care & Control was called to remove the pet’s remains.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The fire department said it is not known whether there was a working smoke detector.
