LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Brian Urlacher wasnt backing down. Chicagos star linebacker would still lie to cover up a concussion.
Urlacher raised a few more eyebrows on Thursday when he reiterated what he told HBO earlier in the year, and it didnt seem to matter to him that Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is recovering from that same injury.
Cutler missed practice Thursday and his playing status remains in question because of a concussion.
Coach Lovie Smith said Cutler continues to improve, but its not clear whether hell be ready to play at San Francisco on Monday night.
Meanwhile, Urlachers stance remains the same.
Yeah, he said when asked whether he would lie to cover up a concussion.
He acknowledged it would be tough to cover up a concussion.
He said there are points in most games where a player is woozy from a hit, where youre like, whoa, that was a good one.
Urlacher said he suffered a concussion against Denver in 2003 but didnt miss any games that season.
Ive been lucky, he said.
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said football will evolve and get safer.
Speaking to a packed auditorium at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Goodell said the league will do what it needs to do to protect the safety of its 1,800 players.
The commissioner also noted Thursday that concussions are a problem in all sports and in the military.
Bills beat Dolphins
In Orchard Park, N.Y., Leodis McKelvin scored on a 79-yard punt return, and the Mario Williams-led Buffalo Bills oft-maligned defense flexed its muscles in a 19-14 victory over the Miami Dolphins.
Safety Jairus Byrd recovered a fumble and made a diving interception, and Bryan Scott sealed the win for the Bills (4-6) with an interception to end the final drive for the Dolphins (4-6).
Around the league
Philadelphia quarterback Nick Foles practiced with the first team while starter Michael Vick recovers from a concussion. Cleveland cornerback Joe Haden was not at practice because of an oblique injury. Haden was not on the field for the portion of Thursdays practice open to the media. He was limited Wednesday but said afterward he expected to play Sunday at Dallas.
