Dog dies in blaze on Gaywood Drive

A dog died in a house fire Friday morning on Fort Wayne’s south side, according to the city fire department.

At 9:49 a.m., firefighters were sent to 3904 Gaywood Drive, near East Rudisill Boulevard.

Smoke was coming from the basement windows, and fire crews discovered that flames in the basement had spread to the first floor of the one-story house.

No one was home at the time, and nobody was hurt. The blaze, which caused heavy damage, was under control by 10:08 a.m., the fire department said.

Animal Care & Control officials were contacted to remove the dog that died. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
