  • Brindza on Lou Groza watch list
    Notre Dame's Kyle Brindza was named to the preseason watch list for the 2014 Lou Groza Award. The Lou Groza Award is given annually to the nation's best placekicker.
  • Two more Irish land on watch lists
    Notre Dame center Nick Martin was placed on the watch list for the Rimington Trophy, given annually to the nation's best player at that position.

Notre Dame women win home opener

SOUTH BEND – Skylar Diggins scored 15 points and Kayla McBride had 18 points to help No. 7 Notre Dame beat Massachusetts 94-50 in its home opener on Sunday.

Jewell Lloyd scored 13 and Michaela Mabrey added 10 for the Irish (2-0), who went on a 17-0 run midway through the first half, and scored 30 points off of UMass' 20 turnovers in the half.

Jasmine Watson had eight points and eight rebounds for the Minutemen (1-3).

Rashida Timbilla, Kim Pierre-Louis and forward Aisha Rodney also scored eight points each for UMass.

The Minutemen were outrebounded 34-25.

The Irish led 53-19 at halftime, then cruised, only outscoring the Minutemen 41-31 in the second half.
