FORT WAYNE – Senior Brenton Scott has accomplished a lot in his three years at Northrop. There are the 1,026 career points, two sectional championships and two SAC tournament titles. But there’s more to come in his final season and beyond.

Living in the shadow of more-heralded twin brother Bryson – Purdue-bound and a Mr. Basketball candidate – Brenton has a bright future at Indiana State.

“The sky’s the limit,” Northrop coach Barak Coolman said of Brenton’s basketball prospectus. “His best basketball is ahead of him. Brenton is a very unselfish, caring person and a part of that has hurt his own development because he has deferred to his brother. He sacrifices for him because he cares about him so much.

“Once he goes to the collegiate level, I see his own game being more a all-around player because he has always been known as a shooter here. That’s only because Bryson was driving and slashing, and (Brenton) needed to shoot.”

Last season, the 6-foot shooting guard earned All-SAC first-team honors with 16 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game. But more is on his way as he has matured.

“One thing I have noticed about Brenton is his maturity level,” Coolman said. “He has always been a good shooter, but now he does a good job of becoming more consistent. At times, in his younger years, he would miss shots just out of a lack of attention and change his form a little bit. Now he really seems to have his shot grooved. He is really focused in all aspects of his life, and it seems to be paying big dividends in the way he is playing.

“He has a commitment to daily excellence. He is really doing a great job, but at times as a freshman or sophomore and being very gifted as a basketball player, he didn’t always give excellence every day.”

Brenton started playing basketball at 4 at the urging of older brother Jay.

“I just want to get better as a basketball player all around and try to help my teammates get better,” said Brenton, who is hoping to make the Indiana All-Stars team. “I just want to show I am one of the better players in the state.

“(My game) has developed physically I am getting stronger, faster and quicker. Mentally was the biggest improvement for me. If you don’t have your mental game, then you aren’t going to be too strong of a player. Growing up, I went more to the basket like my brother, but then I fell in love with the jump shot. I let my jump shot take over my game, but this year I plan on being more aggressive to the basket and shooting midrange and doing everything on the court and whatever the team needs me to do.”

The decision to play for the Sycamores has already enhanced Brenton’s confidence.

“We don’t have to worry about impressing anybody,” Brenton said of his and Bryson’s college choices being set. “Confidently, I think I can take Indiana State to an NCAA tournament and help them get their program back to where it was when Larry Bird was there and hopefully try to play professionally and try to expose my game nationally.”
