A trying season ended in triumph for the Bishop Luers football team.
The Knights became the first team to win four straight Class 2A state championships with a 40-28 win over Indianapolis Ritter on Friday at Lucas Oil Stadium. Bishop Luers (11-4) won the programs 11th state championship in their 15th state finals appearance.
The Knights accomplished the feat in a year in which they had three coaches – Matt Lindsay, Kyle Lindsay and Steve Keefer. Matt Lindsay was the coach for 26 years, but was fired Sept. 16 for having a large number of what the diocese deemed inappropriate videos on his computer.
Kyle Lindsay, Matts son, coached the Sept. 14 game. Keefer, coach of the Knights from 1979 to 86, followed.
The Knights entered the playoffs with a 5-4 record (losing once because of a forfeit). But once again, Luers showed it could handle the postseason pressure. Fridays victory was Luers 24th straight win in the postseason, only two away from the state record of 26 straight.
