News Summary: Dismal start pushes up wheat prices

By The Associated Press

SLOW START: The price of wheat rose after a lack of rain has left the winter crop in the worst condition in 26 years. Although it's still early, a forecast calling for a dry winter has investors concerned about next year's harvest.

GOOD NEWS, SLOW TRADES: Other commodity prices were mixed after the government said U.S. consumer confidence rose this month to its highest level in almost five years. U.S. companies also increased orders of machinery and equipment in October.

MIXED BAG: Prices rose for corn, soybeans, gasoline futures and natural gas. Gold, silver and oil fell.
