Leesburg hunter charged in escape attempt

A Leesburg man is facing charges after trying to run from Indiana conservation officers Saturday, according to a report from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

Charles Norris, 29, was charged with resisting law enforcement, escaping law enforcement, possession of cocaine, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and failure to procure a hunting license, the report said. Norris was also wanted on an outstanding felony warrant in Whitley County.

An Indiana conservation officer on patrol about 5 p.m. spotted a vehicle parked near Durham Lake, North Webster, and saw Norris coming from a woods. Norris fled on foot from three conservation officers and fought the officers as they handcuffed him, the report said.

Norris was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital for a medical examination and then taken to the Kosciusko County Jail. Norris attempted to escape at the jail by jumping from a slowly moving police vehicle and running away while still handcuffed behind his back, the report said.

Conservation officers apprehended him for the second time and returned him to the jail for booking. Norris claimed to have ingested balloons containing methamphetamines earlier in the day, the report said, so he was taken to the hospital for an additional medical examination before being returned to the jail.

North Webster EMS assisted officers in the case.
