Only about 20 people showed up for the Inner City Cancer Walk Sunday afternoon at Freimann Square.Then again, the walk, sponsored by the Mirror Me Foundation, has competition.A southern Indiana man who had served as a Boy Scout executive in the Evansville area has been accused of receiving and possessing sexually explicit materials depicting minors, the Justice Department said tonight.
Ryan C. Bieler, 33, of Ireland, Ind., has been detained while awaiting a trial date, which has not been set, the Justice Department said in a statement.
Bieler was most recently employed as a senior district executive for the Boy Scouts of America's Buffalo Trace Council, which serves a five-county area in the Evansville area, the statement said.
"These types of cases are troubling, but they are made even more disturbing when the individuals charged are those who occupy positions of trust with our children," said Joseph H. Hogsett, U.S. attorney for the southern district of Indiana, in the statement.
Hogsett said the Boy Scouts of of America was fully cooperating with federal law enforcement.
According to the complaint, the statement said, a joint investigation between the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and foreign law enforcement officials began in October 2010, centering on a movie production company located outside the United States.
A search warrant was executed in May at offices owned by the company, the statement said, and law enforcement seized hundreds of DVDs and photographs they allege show sexually explicit conduct involving children.
Bieler was listed as a customer of the company, and a search of his home earlier this month found DVDs purchased from the company, the statement said.
