  • PTA is the best way to help your schools
As Fort Wayne Community Schools holds registration today and Monday, PTA leaders are getting ready to “make the ask.” It's time to help the schools in our community.
  • Today's society the result of ignoring God's law
I read with amusement David Shaw's letter of July 20. His letter demonstrates that, when one cannot make a cogent argument, they resort to ridicule and misinformation.
  • 'Automatic gunfire' careless assumption
Why would The Journal Gazette write an article about nighttime shootings and implicate automatic gunfire? Can you prove that it was automatic? You cannot tell by the look of bullet casings.

Web letter by Steve O’Shaughnessy: Fair tax would solve nearly all our fiscal worries

One of the bigger issues during the recent election cycle was taxes. Now, in the debate on how best fix our economy, taxes remain the hot topic.

The U.S. Tax Code covers over 72,000 pages and is so complex and convoluted that no two “tax experts” can agree on how it should be applied. The current tax code gives unfair advantage to special interest groups while strangling individuals and the backbone of our economy, the small business.

It’s not time for a tax reform, it’s time for a complete do-over. The tangled mess our politicians have created cannot be undone and should be scrapped. Fortunately, we already have a solution, the fair tax. HR25 and S13 already exist in Congress, and this fair tax legislation has the bipartisan support of more than 70 congressmen and senators. Name any other piece of legislation today that has bipartisan support.

The fair tax is a national sales tax that eliminates the income tax (and many other taxes) and abolishes the IRS. The fair tax is so simple even a child can understand it. Imagine keeping all of your paycheck. Imagine never again filling out a tax return. Imagine controlling what you pay in taxes by controlling your spending instead of the government reaching into your pocket and grabbing your hard-earned money. Imagine April 15 being just another beautiful Indiana spring day.

We are currently experiencing one of the worst economic disasters the U.S. has ever seen: high unemployment, runaway debt and spending, with elected leaders who are acting like children. But, like Dorothy’s ruby slippers, we already have a solution: the Fair Tax legislation. We just need to dig our heels in and demand the fair tax legislation be enacted.

It will solve the current economic woes – except for the acting like children part. But it does take away politicians’ power to manipulate the tax code for special interests. I urge you to click your heels together by contacting your senator and congressional representatives and demanding they support the fair tax.
