College basketball preview: IPFW at Navy

When: 7 p.m. today

Where: Annapolis, Md.

Records: IPFW 4-3, Navy 3-4

Radio: 1380 AM

IPFW leaders: Frank Gaines (20.7 ppg), Mario Hines (7.1 rpg), Pierre Bland (2.6 apg)

Navy leaders: Tilman Dunbar (10.6 ppg), Jared Smoot (5.8 rpg), Dunbar (5.1 apg)

Key matchup: It will be a matchup of wills and tempo when the Mastodons visit Navy. The Midshipmen play a deliberate style. They average 58.6 points per game and allow 54. IPFW, on the other hand, wants to get out and run. The fact that the Mastodons played against a Dartmouth team with a similar style will help. Last week, IPFW beat the Big Green 70-66.

The skinny: IPFW will be looking for its third straight win. Because the Mastodons got so far ahead of Judson last week in their 99-22 rout, senior Frank Gaines saw the bench earlier than normal. He scored 15 points in 20 minutes. Then against Dartmouth, he was the fourth-leading scorer on the team with 12 points. Consequently, his average has dropped to 20.7, but IPFW is getting scoring elsewhere. … Navy has an Indiana player on its roster in 6-foot-10 Jared Smoot of Crown Point. The Midshipmen have no seniors but four juniors.
