SOUTH BEND– Notre Dame knocked off one defending national champion from the SEC on Thursday night.

The Irish defeated No. 8 Kentucky 64-50 in Purcell Pavilion, handing the reigning NCAA tournament champions their second loss of the season.

Notre Dame's football team will likely be playing an SEC school in the Jan. 7 BCS championship game, possibly facing defending champion Alabama, which plays Georgia in the SEC title game Saturday.

On the basketball court, which was stormed by the fans including a large contingent of the football team after the game, Notre Dame shot 48 percent from the field and held a 33-27 rebounding advantage Thursday.

Eric Atkins paced the Irish's offense with 16 points, and Jack Cooley and Jerian Grant each scored 13. Cameron Biedscheid added 10 for the Irish.
