Wave of attacks in Iraq kills at least 30 people

BAGHDAD — Officials say a wave of bombings in two Shiite Iraqi cities south of Baghdad has killed at least 30 people and wounded as many as 110 others.

The deadliest of today's attacks was in the city of Hillah where a police officer said back-to-back explosions in a busy commercial area killed 24 people and wounded as many as 90. He says the attack started with a roadside bombing that was followed by a car bomb explosion when rescuers rushed to the scene.

Another police officer says a car bomb blast at the gates of the nearby city of Karbala killed six people and wounded 20 just hours earlier.

Two health officials confirmed the casuality figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to the media.
