Hammond seeking 2nd casino

– A northwest Indiana mayor said he would reverse his stance and support moving one of Gary’s two Lake Michigan riverboat casinos to an on-land location as long as his city gets a second casino.

The proposal to move Gary’s Majestic Star casino – which has two boats at a single dock – to a spot along Interstate 80/94 should involve Gary’s second casino license shifting to Hammond for an inland casino to go along with the city’s current Horseshoe Casino on Lake Michigan, Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. told The Times of Munster for a story Wednesday.

“If the land-based casino is built in Gary, it’s definitely going to hurt Horseshoe Casino’s profits,” McDermott said. “So how can Hammond support Gary, be regional, and not hurt itself? Well this is a proposal, and I think it’s a good proposal.”

Gary officials have unsuccessfully pushed for several years for an inland casino since the Majestic Star operations have been less successful than the riverboats in Hammond and East Chicago, which are closer to Chicago.
