5 hurt when church van flips off road

GARY, Ind. (AP) — Police say five people were hurt when a church van packed with teenagers went off a northwestern Indiana highway and rolled over.

Lake County police spokeswoman Patti Van Til says 12 people were inside the van belonging to the First Baptist Church of Hammond when it crashed Thursday night on Indiana 912 near the Indiana Toll Road in Gary.

Church spokesman Eddie Wilson tells The Times of Munster that the van was carrying members of a church basketball team who had been getting something to eat.

Wilson says a 17-year-old boy was taken by helicopter to an Illinois hospital for his injuries but was talking in the helicopter. Police say the other injured people were taken to nearby hospitals.

Investigators didn't immediately the crash's cause.
