Texans pay bond for parents with kids, cats in rental truck

NEW CASTLE, Ind. – A Pennsylvania couple arrested after police found five children riding in the back of an unheated rental truck is out of jail thanks to a gift from a Texas couple touched by their story.

David and Rebecca Detjen were arrested Wednesday night after state police acting on a relative's tip found the couple at a rest stop on their way to California. Five of their seven children were riding in the back of the truck along with 18 cats.

Both have pleaded not guilty to felony neglect.

WRTV-TV reports (http://bit.ly/VqEdOs) that Julie and David Boenker of Fort Worth, Texas, posted the couple's $10,000 bond.

Julie Boenker said they were upset that the Detjens had been separated from their children.

Officials said the Detjen children remain in Department of Child Services custody.
