VALPARAISO - Nobody wearing royal blue will blame the officiating for IPFW's 63-52 loss to Valparaiso on Wednesday, but the guys in stripes didn't help the Mastodons' chances.
Mario Hines had a reach-in call with 15:53 left in the first half and was hit with a rebounding foul nearly four minutes later to pick up his second and place him on the bench for the remainder of the first half.
By the time IPFW had its seventh foul, Valparaiso was in the 1-and-1 situation for the final 13:30.
Officiating wasn't the only culprit, though. IPFW couldn't make a shot inside.
Hines finished 0 for 8. Joe Reed was 2 for 6. Michael Kibiloski was 1 of 6.
And while IPFW coach Tony Jasick called it a hostile environment, it wasn't that bad, really. I've seen worse. No name-calling, and good fans, but not rowdy.
IPFW didn't get a lot of shots to drop. Some were good shots; others, forced.
And Frank Gaines, who had 14 points at the half, finished with 19. He was 0 for 5 from the field in the second half.
