LYNN, Ind. – An Indiana hunter faces misdemeanor charges after authorities say he illegally shot “the deer of a lifetime.”

Indiana conservation officer Jake Carlile said 21-year-old Austin Spain killed a 16-point trophy buck the weekend of Nov. 17 in Randolph County. The size of the buck made it eligible for a national record book.

But Carlile said Spain violated Indiana law by taking more than one buck in a year.

The buck is believed to score in the 180-inch range under methods used by hunter-conservationist group Boone and Crockett. Spokesman Keith Balfourd told The Star-Press (http://tspne.ws/RC0yuT) that a buck must measure 160 inches to qualify for the book and that few hunters ever take a deer that qualifies.

Illegally killed deer aren’t eligible.
