City panel approves money for trail work

– The Fort Wayne Board of Public Works approved designating federal money Wednesday to a recreational trail on the city’s southwest side.

Construction of a section of the Covington Road Trail between Interstate 69 and Ladue Lane, about four-tenths of a mile to the west, is expected to be bid in April.

The $483,000 project is the beneficiary of Congestion Mitigation Air Quality funding, which will cover 80 percent of the cost, leaving $96,000 for the city to pay.

The section will connect to an existing trail that extends past Homestead Road. Eventually, the trail will be extended east along Covington Road to Time Corners.

After the vote, board member Kumar Menon, City Utilities director, told Greenways Manager Dawn Ritchie that there have been so many trail projects taking place lately it would be helpful to have an update at the next meeting on what has been done where and what’s coming up.

Ritchie said she would be happy to provide that update.
