Huntertown council fills 3 slots on utilities panel

– Huntertown Town Council members appointed a new utilities service board Thursday.

Council President Jim Fortman appointed Democrat Betty Lavachek to a one-year term and Republican Jackie Tracey to a three-year term.

The other council members appointed the third member, Republican Vince Heiny, to a two-year term.

Fortman said that although he appointed the majority of the board members, he did have input from other council members.

Residents voted in support of a referendum on the spring ballot to create a new board that would have no more than one council member, and then affirmed that vote in November with a ballot question.

The previous utilities board, disbanded this month, included all five council members. According to state law, no more than two-thirds of the board can be of the same political party and members must live in the town’s utility service area.

The new board will meet after the first of the year.
