Few government events are scheduled for this holiday week, but there are some year-end ceremonies as well as a Christmas party for animals.
On Friday, Allen County officials elected in November will take the oath of office. Their terms begin Jan. 1, but officials decided to perform the swearing-in on the last work day of the year. Among those taking the oath are new county coroner Craig Nelson and former county commissioner Bill Brown, who joins the County Council.
State representatives and senators elected in November have already assumed office; new Gov. Mike Pence and Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz start Jan. 14.
In Indianapolis on Friday, Loretta Rush, the newest Indiana Supreme Court justice, will take the oath and ceremonially don her court robe. Allen Superior Court Judge Charles Pratt will be among the speakers.
Area residents have a chance to attend one more Christmas party next weekend when the Black Pine Animal Sanctuary in Albion has its Animal Enrichment Day, and visitors can watch the animals open their presents.
