Gun permits next for teachers?
In the aftermath of the horrific shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the fact that Rep. Louis Gohmert, R-Texas, was the only gun-rights activist (31 declined) to appear on the Sunday TV news broadcasts is a statement in itself.
Surely, his comments were an embarrassment to gun-rights advocates, especially when he declared, I wish to God (the principal) had had an M-4 in her office, locked up so when she heard gunfire ...(she) takes (the shooter) out, takes his head off before he can kill those precious kids.
Most people will see the irony in the idea of a compassionate, nurturing person wielding an assault weapon and taking anybodys head off. Yet there has been talk of teachers arming themselves.
One has to ask when, in a profession already mired in overwhelming expectations and regulations, we will see a new requirement for teacher certification – firearms proficiency.

Fiscal cliff here already for most
The fiscal cliff is here and now for millions of hard-working people doing their job on a daily basis – unlike our elected officials, who are not doing theirs. Its not about a party; its about our country. While the partyers are arguing over whos right and whos wrong, the people of this country are suffering.
I recently lost my job of 38 years with a local defense contractor due to budget cuts and downsizing. Ive seen it coming for years, and Im just a lowly tool-and-die maker. Somewhere down the line, our elected officials had to see this coming. And still nothing was done.
Whats maddening to me about having to find a new job after 38 years is that everybody is trying to capitalize on my misfortune, i.e., colleges, credit-rating companies, résumé builders, health care providers. They all want money from someone who is 60 years old, looking for work and trying to hold on to as much as they can until they can make more, not to spend themselves further into debt.
But our elected officials, who are not doing their job, dont have to worry about such trivial things because once they leave office, theyre pretty much set for the rest of their lives, thanks to us taxpaying working-class people they are fighting over instead of for.
The partys over – get to work or hit the door.

City water needed for southwest
In the interests of public health and safety, the Fort Wayne City Council should proceed with public hearings on the merits of pursuing the condemnation of the Aqua Indiana water system in the southwest Fort Wayne service area.
I support private enterprise, but when it comes to public health and safety effective public regulation needs to be in place, and the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission has a poor track record when it comes to effective control of this utility.
The state does not require water-quality reports to be completed for every potential contaminant each and every year, and Aqua Indiana has had violations in the past.
City Utilities is in a better position with its vast water resources and has the motivation as a public institution to provide quality water for the health and safety of the citizens of Fort Wayne, rather than the profit motive of Aqua Indiana.
I am not convinced that a corporation clearly more interested in profits than in providing safe, good-tasting, high-pressure water will ever make adequate investments in water quality since it is not tasked with improving the quality of life in Fort Wayne.
The council should vote in favor of allowing the condemnation process of Aqua Indiana to proceed and thus provide the citizens of Fort Wayne the opportunity for a thorough public hearing of the issues.

A new form of child abuse
Legalizing marijuana is child abuse. Think about it: children sitting in the same room with parents, etc. who light up. Secondhand smoke from cigarettes – what about the same from a joint? People are already stupid for doing it, now they will become more stupid. Food off the table, clothes off childrens back, bills dont get paid because the smokers need to feel good.
What is wrong with our government? Do we really need the tax money at the risk to children? Were not the most intelligent country as it is.
