INDIANAPOLIS — Two nonprofit groups have bought a 100-year-old former post office on the east side of Indianapolis and intend to renovate it to sell for commercial use.
The Indianapolis Business Journal reported Wednesday that the Irvington Development Organization and Irvington Historical Society have bought the two-story, 2,400-square-foot building that was built in 1903. The building has been vacant since the late 1990s.
Development Organization director Margaret Banning says the group convinced the local Historic Preservation Commission to delay demolishing the building long enough for the sale to go through.
The two groups bought the building with a $110,000 loan from Citizens Energy Group's community development program. Banning says the groups are seeking additional funds to cover an anticipated $400,000 for roof repairs and exterior restoration.
