Justin Mitchell scored 27 points and Jescus Mitchell added 14 points, as the Wayne boys basketball team defeated North Side 63-59 in the SAC tournament Wednesday night in which a fight nearly broke out.
The sixth-seeded Generals, playing at home, staved off a late rally from the third-seeded Redskins.
Wayne’s Kye Black and North Side’s Sean McGee were ejected after the skirmish.
Nygel Jones led North Side with 12 points.
Wayne (6-1) led 50-40 entering the fourth quarter, but North Side (5-4) got within two.
NORTHROP 76, SOUTH SIDE 71: Bryson Scott scored 23 points for the Bruins, who held off a late 24-19 run by the Archers.
Scott got 18 of his points in the second half, including 11 in the third quarter, when the Bruins went on a 24-18 run to take a 57-47 lead.
Antonio Richmond aided Northrop with 17 points.
South Side’s Domonique Gleason had 22 points, 10 of which came at the free-throw line. Aaron Montgomery had 17 points.
CONCORDIA 69, BISHOP DWENGER 49: Brian Gremaux’s 17 points led the Cadets, who were up five points before a 24-12 second-quarter run. D.J. McCall added 13 points and Thomas Starks had 12.
The Saints’ Grady Eifert scored 13 points.
CONCORDIA 66, WAYNE 44: Courtney Smith’s 20 points led Concordia. She had 11 of the Cadets’ 19 points in the first quarter, when they got out to a 15-point lead.
DeJour Young added 16 points.
Wayne was paced by Carmen James’ 20 points.
SNIDER 67, NORTHROP 30: Meredith Shipman’s 19 points paced the Panthers. She did most of her damage in the first quarter with 12 of the Panthers’ 22 points, as they built a 15-point lead over the Bruins. Aleah Swary paced the Bruins with 18 points.
SOUTH SIDE 72, NORTH SIDE 19: The Archers got off to a 19-4 lead and never looked back.
Lakesha LaMaster-Stephens paced South Side with 13 points.
Lynnia Noel added 11.
