Snowmobile hits tree, injuring rider

An Avilla man was injured Thursday when the snowmobile he was working on took off unexpectedly, traveling about 100 yards before striking a tree.

Christopher Hackman, 57, was working on a 1999 Polaris 500 Indy Trail snowmobile in a garage near his home in the 5500 block of East Baseline Road about 11 a.m. Thursday, the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said.

Hackman was sitting on the snowmobile to repair it and as he started it, the snowmobile’s throttle stuck open, causing it to accelerate out of the garage, a report said.

The snowmobile traveled northeast and hit a small tree, throwing Hackman from the vehicle, the report said.

Hackman was treated at the scene for a leg injury and was later transported to Parkview Regional Medical Center for further treatment, the report said.
