The IPFW mens basketball team stumbled down the stretch, falling 88-74 to IUPUI on Thursday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
The Mastodons were outscored 19-2 in the final 6 minutes of the game in losing their Summit League opener.
The game was tied at 39 at halftime. But Frank Gaines, who scored 15 of his game-high 28 points in the second half, scored five points during a 6-0 run to give the Mastodons a 68-61 lead with 8:07 remaining.
Two free throws by Gaines gave IPFW a 72-67 lead with 6:05 to go. The Mastodons (6-8, 0-1) scored just two more points the rest of the game.
IUPUI went on a 15-0 run to take a 10-point lead at 82-72. Two free throws by IPFWs Michael Kibiloski with 1:15 to go ended the run. The Jaguars made six free throws to wrap up the win.
The Jaguars shot 72 percent from the field in the second half.
Gaines was the only IPFW player to finish in double figures in scoring. Mario Hines, Kibiloski and Joe Edwards each had nine points for the Mastodons. Gaines and Isaiah McCray had seven rebounds. McCray had seven points.
Five players reached double figures for IUPUI (6-10, 1-2), led by John Hart with 26 points, including 17 in the second half. Greg Rice scored 16 points, 11 of which came in the second half. Donovan Gibbs and Lyonell Gaines both had 12 points. Mitchell Patton scored 10 points.
IUPUI scored 25 points off 16 IPFW turnovers.
SAINT FRANCIS 99, IU-KOKOMO 55: Scott Kohne had 22 points and six rebounds to lead the Cougars to a home victory.
Saint Francis (11-4) led by 19 at halftime (41-22) on the way to the victory.
Ethan Hussey added 11 points and five rebounds. Jordan Hahn had 10 points.
SAINT FRANCIS 79, ROBERT MORRIS 52: Five Cougars reached double figures in scoring as Saint Francis advanced at the Saint Xavier Holiday Tournament in Chicago.
Jenelle Wilson led the way with 19 points and seven assists. Skylarr Shurn added 18 points and five assists. The Cougars improved to 13-0, extending their best start to a season.
Kayla Drake scored 11 points. Meghan Slusher and Brooke Ridley both scored 10 points. Kalah Baer had six points and nine rebounds.
The Cougars face Saint Francis (Ill.) in the second round at 6 p.m. today.
HUNTINGTON 59, CALUMET 44: Allison Greene scored 14 points for the Foresters in a first-round win at the Saint Xavier Holiday Tournament.
Huntington limited Calumet to 18 points in the second half.
Sarah Miller-Jennings had 12 points.
Pazia Speed added nine points and nine assists for the Foresters (9-3).
