Columbia City boys suffer 1st loss of year

– Columbia City fell from the ranks of the unbeaten boys basketball teams in pool play of the Carroll Holiday Shootout.

The Eagles fell to Munster 66-54 in the tournament’s marquee evening matchup Friday. Columbia City (8-1) defeated Blackhawk Christian 76-29 in an afternoon game.

Drew Benedict scored 22 points for Columbia City against Munster, and Derek Hinen added 16.

Nate Bubash scored 23 for Munster, which improved to 8-0 after also defeated Blackhawk in an afternoon game, 80-45.

Homestead won two tournament games, defeating Prairie Heights 91-36 and DeKalb 51-50. John Gellar had 16 points for the Spartans against Prairie Heights, and Nick Gamble scored 17 against DeKalb, which got 12 points each from Adison Daub and Cole Hartman.

Hartman scored 19 and Austin Macy added 16 in DeKalb’s 66-50 tourney win over Prairie Heights.

Carroll went 1-1, defeating Churubusco 82-25 with Jeremy Kalonji leading the way with 20 points and falling to Marion 53-44. Mason Miller scored 11 in the Chargers’ loss.

Marion also defeated Churubusco 86-61. The Eagles got 27 points from Brent Simmons.

Heritage also went 1-1, beating East Noble 58-48 with Zac Toles’ 14 points leading the way and falling 71-48 to Huntington North. Noah Reed had 16 points for Huntington North.

Huntington North also defeated East Noble 51-31with Kalvin Miller scoring 14 points.

LEO 98, ANGOLA 67: Sam Waters led the Lions with 23 points in the home win. Justin Davis scored 18 for the Hornets.

FREMONT 60, MORENCI 48: Tyler Jenkins had 28 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Eagles in the Coldwater (Mich.) Tournament.

Girls basketball

BEN DAVIS HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT: Carroll fell 48-43 to Plainfield and 59-46 to Bloomington South. Kylie Murphy scored 15 for the Chargers against Plainfield, and Madison Peterson had 15 in the loss to Bloomington South.

HERITAGE 51, CHURUBUSCO 13: Kendal Knapke scored 12 points to lead the Patriots at home against the Eagles.

FREMONT 40, NILES 33: Miranda White scored 18 and Shea Rhonehouse added 11 for the Eagles in the Coldwater (Mich.) Tournament.
