Police raid suspected dog-fighting ring in Churubusco

– Eighteen people were arrested in Churubusco after police raided a suspected dog-fighting ring, the Whitley County Sheriff's Department said.

The sheriff's department, acting on a tip, said it obtained a search warrant and raided the home of Edward "Eddie" E. Smith in the 900 block of East Indiana 205 about 11 p.m. Saturday. There, police said they found a bloody pit bull-type dog in a plywood fighting ring. Two other dogs were located in the house, police said. One was a pit bull-type dog that was injured and bleeding. The other was a young dog with no injuries, police said. All three animals were secured by the Whitley County Humane Shelter.

The 18 people taken into custody were charged with attending an animal fighting contest, a misdemeanor.

The Whitley County Sheriff's Department said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending.
