A Milford man and his daughter were seriously injured Friday after their buggy collided with a car near Nappanee.
According to police reports, Arlen R. Lehman, 51, of Milford, was attempting to stop his horse-drawn buggy from entering the road while exiting a private driveway with his family about 6 p.m.
The horse unexpectedly trotted onto the road at 5414 West County Road 1350 North and into the path of a 2002 Volkswagen JGS driven by Jodi R. Kauffman, 23, of Etna Green, the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department said.
Lehman and his 4-year-old daughter, Ranae Lehman, were flown by helicopter to South Bend Memorial Hospital in serious condition.
Kauffman was not injured in the crash, nor were Lehman’s wife and two other children, ages 10 and 11, who were inside the buggy.
Kauffman told police she was westbound approaching the driveway when she saw the horse enter onto the road behind a row of pine trees.
Kauffman said she immediately braked but slid into the side of the passenger carriage, causing it to roll onto its side, said Sgt. Chad Hill, spokesman for the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department.
The crash is still under investigation.
The Indiana State Police also assisted in the crash investigation.
