As John Weicker finishes his final two months of school, he’s counting down the days with a small ticker in his office.On Thursday, the counter read 44 days, plus a few hours, minutes and seconds.Bishop Emeritus John D’Arcy, the former head of the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese, has been diagnosed with cancer for a second time, a diocesan spokesman said Tuesday.
D’Arcy, 80, was in Boston for the holiday visiting family and friends when nausea and a severe headache prompted him to see a doctor, diocese spokesman Sean McBride said.
D’Arcy, who beat prostate cancer after being diagnosed in 2011, was told that he now has another type of cancer. Citing privacy laws, McBride declined to specify what sort of cancer.
McBride said D’Arcy will spend three weeks receiving outpatient treatment in Boston and will return home to Fort Wayne to continue treatment.
D’Arcy retired as bishop in January 2010 and was succeeded by the Rev. Kevin C. Rhoades. D’Arcy continues to be involved in the church, celebrating Mass, hearing confessions, serving as a chaplain at Bishop Luers High School and hosting retreats.
He’ll put those activities on hold while receiving treatment, McBride said.
